What is Forex
What is Forex? Forex is de afkorting voor ‘Foreign exchange’. Forex wordt ook nog afgekort met FX. Het is de markt voor de munten van landen or gebieden. Zo worden op de forex markt de waardes bepaald van de ene munt tegenover de andere, or eigenlijk dus de wisselkoersen.
The forex market is the largest market that can be traded. Daily trading is not in millions, not in billions, but in trillions on this market. In 2019, this averaged $6.6 Trillion US Dollars per day. The total market size is estimated at $2.49 Quadrillion in 2022.
Trading
In de forexmarkt wordt vanwege de marktgrootte en stabiliteit die het biedt veel gehandeld. Vanwege de stabiliteit is het een zeer betrouwbare markt. Op de markt wordt er altijd per valuta paar gehandeld. Zo kun je op deze markt bijvoorbeeld EURUSD vinden, dit staat voor €Euro – $USdollar. Hierin wordt de waarde van €1,00 tegenover de $ US dollar beschreven. Is de koers bijvoorbeeld 1,09754 betekent dit dat je voor €1,00 euro dus $1,09754 dollar krijgt op dat moment. Er wordt gewerkt zoals je ziet met tot wel 5 cijfers achter de komma.
On the forex markets, you can sell both long and short. This means you can speculate on a rising or falling rate. If you expect the rate to go up, you theoretically buy (long) one currency until the point where you think it won't go higher, at which point you exchange it for the other currency. Speculating the other way on a falling rate (short) is also possible, or course—then you do exactly the opposite.
Majors, minors and exotics
Not every market is equally large. This depends heavily on the country or region where the chosen currency is used and the economy or that country or region. Therefore, a distinction is made between different currency pairs.
Majors
De grootste valuta paren op de markt noemen we de ‘Majors’. Dit zijn de grootste economieën met de grootste marktwaarde, het zijn daarom ook de meest verhandelde forex paren. De majors zijn:
- EUR-USD
- USD-JPY
- GBP-USD
- USD-CHF
- USD-CAD
- AUD-USD
- NZD-USD
Here CAD stands for $Canadian Dollar, AUD for $Australian Dollar, and NZD for $New Zealand Dollar.
EUR-USD alone accounts for 20% or all forex trading transactions and is by far the most traded forex pair. Additionally, 50% or all trades involve the US dollar.
Minors
De minor forex pairs zijn de iets kleinere maar meest verhandelde en stabiele forex markten waarbij er niet tegen de $US dollar wordt verhandeld. Soms worden de minor forex pairs ook wel aangeduid als ‘crosses’. Hieronder staan de minors opgesomd:
- EUR-GBP
- EUR-JPY
- GBP-JPY
- GBP-CAD
- CHF-JPY
- EUR-AUD
- NZD-JPY
Exotics
The last group to define are the exotics. These are the most exotic forex pairs, which are traded significantly less compared to the previously mentioned pairs. What stands out about exotic pairs is that these markets are much more volatile than the others, with much larger movements taking place. While the Majors orten move only a maximum or 1% per day, with exotics this can sometimes be tens or percent. We won't list all exotic pairs here, just a few examples:
- USD-MXN
- USD-TRY
- EUR-ZAR
- EUR-RUB
- GBP-PLN
Here MXN stands for Mexican Peso, TRY for Turkish Lira, ZAR for South African Rand, RUB for Russian Ruble, and PLN for Polish Zloty.
Where can you trade Forex?
If you want to start trading Forex, I advise you to first read up thoroughly on day trading and trading methods. It's not as simple as it seems.
