Spot the Traps Before You Fall Into Them

Automatic detection or bull traps and bear traps at swing levels—with a scoring system that assesses the strength or each trap.

The most frustrating scenario in trading

You see a clear breakout above a swing high. Everything points to continuation. You go long. And then—within a few candles—price completely reverses, shoots through your entry, and takes out your stop loss. What just happened? You walked straight into a trap.

Bull traps and bear traps aren't accidents. They're the direct result or how smart money operates: institutional players deliberately hunting liquidity at swing levels by luring retail traders with false breakouts. Price briefly breaks through a key level, triggers the stop losses and limit orders sitting there, then quickly reverses back in the original direction.

This pattern is one or the most reliable in Smart Money trading. But recognizing it manually—in real time—is tough. You need to identify swing levels, spot the breakout, assess the wick size, check volume, and estimate reversal speed. By the time you've analyzed all that, the opportunity's orten gone.

What does the Smart Money Trap Detector do?

The SMT Smart Money Trap Detector automates the entire detection process. The indicator continuously scans your chart for liquidity traps at swing levels and gives you a clear signal when a trap is confirmed—including a scoring system that rates the quality or each trap.

The 4-step detection process

  1. Swing Detection—The indicator identifies swing highs and swing lows based on a customizable lookback period. These are the levels where liquidity accumulates: stop losses from longs below swing lows, stop losses from shorts above swing highs.
  2. Liquidity Sweep—When price breaks through a swing level, the indicator detects a "sweep." This is the moment when smart money collects the liquidity—stop losses are triggered and limit orders are filled.
  3. Trap Confirmation—The sweep alone isn't enough. The indicator waits for price to reverse back past the swing level within a customizable number or candles. Only then is the trap confirmed. This prevents false signals on genuine breakouts.
  4. Scoring (1–5)—Each confirmed trap receives a score based on three factors: the size or the wick relative to ATR, the speed or the reversal, and the volume on the sweep candle. The higher the score, the stronger the signal.

Bull Trap vs. Bear Trap

Bull Trap (bearish signal): Price breaks above a swing high (fake breakout), quickly reverses. Smart money has filled shorts on the liquidity from breakout buyers. Expect a decline.

Bear Trap (bullish signal): Price breaks below a swing low (fake breakdown), quickly reverses. Smart money has filled longs on the liquidity from panic sellers. Expect a rise.

Note the naming: a "bull trap" is a trap for bulls (buyers get lured in), so it's a bearish signal. A "bear trap" is a trap for bears and is a bullish signal.

The scoring system: not all traps are equal

The indicator gives each trap a score from 1 to 5 based on three measurable factors:

FactorMax pointsHow it works
Wick Size / ATR2.0Larger wicks (relative to ATR) indicate a more aggressive sweep. More liquidity collected = stronger signal.
Reversal Speed1.5The faster price returns after the sweep, the stronger the trap. A reversal in 1 candle scores higher than a reversal in 3 candles.
Volume Spike1.5Above-average volume on the sweep candle confirms that liquidity was actually absorbed. More volume = more conviction.

A trap scoring 4–5 is a high-probability setup. A trap scoring 1–2 deserves additional confirmation from other analysis.

What do you see on the chart?

  • Arrows—Green arrow pointing up for bull traps (buy opportunity), red arrow pointing down for bear traps (sell opportunity).
  • Labels—Text on the chart showing the trap type and score, for example "BULL TRAP (4)".
  • Liquidity Zones—Semi-transparent zones around swing levels where liquidity accumulates. This is where you expect sweeps to occur.
  • Dashboard—A compact panel (top right) showing the last 10 detected traps, including type, score, and how many candles ago.

Non-repainting signals

All signals are only generated after bar close. The current, unclosed candle is never used for signal detection. What you see on the chart is actually confirmed. No signals that disappear or move after the fact.

Fully customizable

Adjust the indicator to match your trading style:

  • Swing Lookback Period—Determines how significant a swing level needs to be. Higher values = fewer but stronger levels.
  • Confirmation Candles—How many candles price has to reverse. Stricter (fewer candles) = fewer but more reliable signals.
  • Min Wick/ATR Ratio—Minimum wick size to qualify as a sweep. Filters out small, insignificant breaches.
  • All visual elements (zones, labels, dashboard, alerts) can be independently enabled or disabled.
  • Full color configuration.

Three platforms

The Smart Money Trap Detector is available for MetaTrader 4, MetaTrader 5, and TradingView. All three versions contain the same detection logic, scoring, and visual elements.

Who is this for?

  • Smart Money / ICT traders who use liquidity sweeps as an entry model.
  • Swing traders who want to know if a breakout is real or a trap.
  • Day traders who want to time traps at key levels for reversal entries.
  • Traders who struggle to recognize traps in real time and need confirmation.
  • Anyone tired or stop losses getting hit by false breakouts.

Combine with other SMT tools

The Trap Detector works standalone, but becomes even more powerful when combined with other tools from the SMT line:

  • SMT Session Pro—Traps in kill zones are stronger than traps during quiet hours. Use session context to filter traps.
  • SMT Multi-Timeframe Dashboard—Check the confluence meter before following a trap signal. If multiple timeframes confirm the same direction, the trap is more reliable.
  • Trading Bot Builder—Build a bot that combines trap signals with your own entry criteria.
